Two southern classic rockers still got it!
At the Covelli Center, ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd were both in top form. Lynyrd Skynyrd, although only Gary Rossington remains from the original line-up, started the show with non-stop hits and a couple new tunes as well. The band really had to work hard to get through their set, sometimes appearing a little tired and road weary, but gave every thing they had to win the crowd over which they did. By contrast, while Skynyrd had to really work super hard, ZZ Top were effortlessly cool. These guys kick ass without even breaking a sweat. They played all of my favorite hits including ending the show with Sweet Home Alabama and the encore, Free Bird. Their mastery of their instruments is superb and their vocals are as strong as ever. This band only gets better as the years go by. They are as cool as ever. They covered their 42 year catalogue well represented. Their stage light show is impressive as always, but I suspect their unusual amp set-up was not working properly. They've lost nothing to age. Their vocals are as strong as ever. Their stage light show is impressive as always. I believe those pseudo amps were supposed to light up with special digital lighting effects, but did not show any all night. I waited for them to light up or something, but nothing happened. One other slight disappointment, No Encore! Can't complain too much though, they certainly gave me my money's worth with 90 min. of ass kickin' blues rock. Thumbs up. The Covelli Center is an excellent venue to see a concert. My first time there and I would certainly return in the future. All members of the band are excellent musicians that work well together.
